The activity zone at the Chorzów campus of the University of Silesia has been nominated for European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award. It’s one of the most important architectural awards in Europe, commonly referred to as “Academy Award in architecture”.

449 objects have been included on the list of nominated projects in the latest edition of the competition. The Polish architecture is represented by 20 nominees. One of them is the multipurpose activity zone, which constitutes part of the Chorzów campus of the University of Silesia.

The nominees are indicated by independent experts from Europe, national architectural organisations, as well as the Award Advisory Committee. The recently announced list is the first stage of selection. It includes objects created from October 2018 to October 2020. The results of the second stage will not be announced until September. Then the list will be supplemented with the objects completed between November 2020 and April 2021. In line with the schedule, the results of the competition will be known in April 2022.

The multipurpose activity zone nominated for EU Mies Award is a joint project of the University of Silesia and the City Hall in Chorzów. It was designed as a meeting point where the variety of attractions allows to spend time in an interesting way, and may be used by people in each age group. The zone includes a square with football and basketball ground, fitness devices and green areas. Its attractiveness is increased by elements of small architecture and playground. The modern space has been adapted for the needs of people with disabilities. The official opening took place in June 2019.
