Baird, Jr., Professor of Science<\/span><\/span>\u00a0at\u202f<\/span><\/span>Harvard University<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>bestselling author (in lists of the New York\u00a0<\/span>Times,<\/span><\/span><\/a>Wall<\/span>\u00a0Street Journal, Publishers Weekly, Die\u00a0<\/span>Zeit<\/span>, Der Spiegel,\u00a0<\/span>L’Express<\/span>\u00a0and more). He received a PhD in Physics from the\u202f<\/span><\/span>Hebrew University of Jerusalem<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0in Israel at age 24 (1980-1986), led the first international project supported by the\u202f<\/span><\/span>Strategic\u00a0<\/span>Defense<\/span>\u00a0Initiative<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(1983-1988), and was subsequently a long-term member of the\u202f<\/span><\/span>Institute for Adv<\/span>a<\/span>nced Study<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0at Princeton (1988-1993). Loeb has written 8 books, including most recently,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Extraterrestrial<\/span>\u00a0(Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2021)<\/span><\/span><\/a>, and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>about 800 papers<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(with an\u00a0<\/span><\/span>h-index of 117<\/span><\/span><\/a>) on a wide range of topics, including black holes, the first stars, the search for\u00a0<\/span>extraterrestrial<\/span>\u00a0life and the future of the Universe. Loeb is the Director of the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Institute for Theory and Computation<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(2007-present) within the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Harvard-Smithsonian\u00a0<\/span>Center<\/span>\u00a0for Astrophysics<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0, and also serves as the Head of the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Galileo Project<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(2021-present). He had been the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>longest serving Chair<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0of Harvard’s\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Department of Astronomy<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(2011-2020) and the Founding Director of Harvard’s\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Black Hole Initiative<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(2016-2021). He is an elected fellow of the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>American Academy of Arts & Sciences<\/span><\/span><\/a>, the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>American Physical Society<\/span><\/span><\/a>, and the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>International Academy of Astronautics<\/span><\/span><\/a>. Loeb is\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a former member<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST)<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0at the White House, a former chair of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the Board on Physics and Astronomy of the National Academies<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(2018-2021) and a current member of the Advisory Board for\u00a0<\/span><\/span>„Einstein: Visualize the Impossible”<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0of the Hebrew University. He also chairs the Advisory Committee for the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Breakthrough\u00a0<\/span>Starshot<\/span>\u00a0Initiative<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(2016-present) and serves as the Science Theory Director for all\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Initiatives<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Breakthrough Prize Foundation<\/span><\/span><\/a>. In 2012,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>TIME magazine<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0selected Loeb as one of the 25 most influential people in space and in 2020 Loeb\u00a0<\/span><\/span>was selected<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0among the 14 most inspiring Israelis of the last decade.
