ABOUT THE INSTITUTE

The Institute of Mathematics at the University of Silesia in Katowice is one of the six research institutes of the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), established on October 1, 2019, as a result of a reorganization of the University’s structure. Prior to this, the Institute was part of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.

The Institute conducts scientific research in various fields, including:

  • Algebra and Number Theory,
  • Biomathematics,
  • Computational Intelligence Systems and Fuzzy Logic,
  • Differential Equations,
  • Functional Equations and Inequalities,
  • Mathematics and Computer Science Didactics,
  • Mathematical Logic,
  • Real Analysis,
  • Statistics and Financial Mathematics,
  • Set Theory and Topology,
  • Probability Theory and Applications of Mathematics.

Since 1985, the Institute of Mathematics has been publishing its own journal, Annales Mathematicae Silesianae, publishing research and review articles in the broadly understood theoretical and applied mathematics. Since 2021, the journal has been indexed in the Emerging Sources Citation Index, one of the citation indices available through the Web of Science database.

The staff of the Institute of Mathematics, along with collaborating academic teachers from the FST, conduct classes both in mathematical studies and in various other fields of study, such as computer science, biology, biotechnology, environmental protection, chemistry, physics, mechatronics, pedagogy, and human resource management, as well as in the Doctoral School. Moreover, they supervise and review bachelor’s and master’s theses and serve on habilitation and doctoral committees. One of the most significant teaching achievements of the Institute of Mathematics at US in recent years is the implementation and development of a double degree program in cooperation with the University of L’Aquila (Italy). This program, titled Realmaths – International Double Msc Degree Programme in Mathematics for Real World Applications, allows participants to obtain diplomas in Mathematics from both universities.

Among the most important cyclical events organized or co-organized by the Institute of Mathematics, the following should be mentioned:

  • Lecture in the honor of Prof. Andrzej Lasota, organized annually since 2008 to commemorate the work and person of the late Prof. Andrzej Lasota, an outstanding mathematician and long-time employee of the Institute of Mathematics and Honorary Doctor of the University of Silesia. As part of the annual meetings, distinguished scientists in the field of theory and applications of mathematical sciences are invited to give lectures.
  • Conference on the Applications of Logic in Philosophy and the Foundations of Mathematics, organized jointly by the Institute of Mathematics of the University of Silesia, the University of Opole, and the University of Wrocław.
  • Series of scientific seminars Katowice-Debrecen Winter Seminars on Functional Equations and Inequalities, organized jointly by the Institute of Mathematics of the University of Silesia in Katowice and the University of Debrecen in Hungary, devoted to the subject of functional equations and inequalities.
  • Prof. Marek Kuczma Competition for the best Polish paper on functional equations and related issues, organized annually since 1975.
