Lower waste production is one of the main goals of modern industry. About less waste chemistry, we will talk with Prof. Kamil Kamiński from the University of Silesia in Katowice and Piotr Sakiewicz, PhD Eng. from the Silesian University of Technology.

Prof. Kamil Kamiński and green chemistry

The subject of the research carried out by the team of Prof. Kamil Kamiński from the Institute of Physics is an innovative combination of chemistry and physics, thanks to which it is possible to use high pressure to influence chemical reactions. The scientists’ goal is to obtain biodegradable and biocompatible polymeric materials based on polyesters and find new methods to obtain materials of specific structure and properties in ecological conditions. Such polymers can be used mostly in biomedical solutions. The key element is the prefix “eco-” – Prof. Kamil Kamiński’s team desires to meet the conditions of the so-called green chemistry; thus, each stage of their work should be friendly to the environment. Consequently, both obtained materials and methods of their synthesis are safe for the environment. Positive results of the research will contribute to solving the global problems with excessive amounts of the produced waste.

Piotr Sakiewicz, PhD Eng. and the second life of plastic

Piotr Sakiewicz, PhD Eng. from the Silesian University of Technology carries out research with a similar goal. The invention of its team – integrated technology of polyolefin waste materials decontamination – allows for the purification of plastic waste and, consequently, its multiple processing. The problem lies in the fact that they are contaminated with food leftovers or various types of substances during transport. The wastes have to be cleaned and decontaminated in order to be recycled. The technology of purifying waste plastic developed by scientists from the Silesian University of Technology was presented during the International Invention and Innovation Show INTARG 2022. The invention allows for cheaper and more ecological purification, which results in obtaining almost a virgin material, which retains properties similar to the source material.

The meeting with scientists fighting for a better, healthy “eco-world” takes place on Thursday, 9 June 2022 at 6 p.m. The host of this edition will be ed. Marta Paluch from Radio eM.

The Scientific Premiere Stage is co-organised by the Metropolis GZM.
