13 September 2021 was the hundredth anniversary of Stanisław Lem’s birth. The Sejm of the Republic of Poland decided to commemorate this anniversary by making 2021 the Year of Lem. The August Chełkowski Institute of Physics of the University of Silesia in Katowice and the Katowice branch of the Polish Physical Society, joining the ongoing celebrations, organise an open event entitled “Lem’s Physics: Fiction then, Science now”, which will take place on 9 December 2021.

Is literature a prophet for science? What will the world look like in the near and distant future? What are the fears and expectations related to the development of science? These and many other questions will be answered by literary scholars, writers, artists and physicists as part of the planned lectures, interviews and discussion panels.

Detailed information on the event is available on the website of the Institute of Physics of the University of Silesia.

The online broadcast will be available on the YouTube channel.

The honorary patronage over the event was taken by the dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Prof. Danuta Stróż.

Media Partners of the event: Television of the University of Silesia, “Gazeta Uniwersytecka” UŚ (University of Silesia Magazine), Science Point, Zysk i Spółka Press.
