Opening of the spinPLACE Centre for Creativity and Coworking

After long renovation and adaptation works, spinPLACE – Centre for Creativity and Coworking, distinguished by its unique, modern space – will have its opening. The Centre is a place to support initiatives related to prototyping and animating various projects of the University of Silesia in Katowice, especially in regards to cooperation with the academic, social and economic environment.

On Tuesday, 27 February 2024, at 11.00 a.m., the Centre, which had its headquarters in Katowice on ul. Bankowa 5, will be officially opened. The invitation to participate in the event is addressed to university employees and invited guests.

The official opening includes, among others, a speech by Robert Pyka, PhD, DLitt, Assoc. Prof. – Plenipotentiary of the Rector for Observatory of Urban and Metropolitan   Processes on the importance of top-down and bottom-up innovation places and their role in building the innovation potential of the metropolis and the region, as well as an exhibition of graphics, design, animation and multimedia implementations ‘Multicultural Landscape’, coordinated by Prof. Małgorzata Łuszczak from the Institute of Fine Arts of the University of Silesia and the exhibition ‘The Art of Algorithms’ curated by Prof. Urszula Boryczka from the Institute of Computer Science of the University of Silesia.

The event will include an artistic performance of the Academic String Orchestra from the Faculty of Arts and Educational Science of the University of Silesia. Orchestra under the baton of Małgorzata Kaniowska, PhD, DLitt, Assoc. Prof. will present the following programme:

  • Nino Rota (arr. Robert Longfield) ‘A Time for Us’ theme from the movie Romeo and Juliet;
  • John Williams (arr. Calvin Custer) theme from the film Schindler’s List – violin solo by Piotr Szczotka;
  • Karl Jenkins ‘Palladio’ part I Allegretto – violin solo by Piotr Szczotka.

On the same day, at 1.00 p.m., in the Rawa Club (located in the loft of the spinPLACE building), there will be a meeting of the Rector with the student and doctoral community of the University of Silesia regarding postulates concerning studies at the University of Silesia. It will be an opportunity to listen to each other and discuss what the university can do for the student and doctoral community, and what will require the help of the ministry or local authorities. Topics that will be discussed include the possibility and need to build student housing in the centre of Katowice and the expansion of social support services offered at the University.  The discussed postulates will be presented to the Minister of Science during the meeting on 27 March. The project was co-financed by the European Union from the European Regional Development Fund under the Regional Operational Programme of the Silesian Voivodeship for 2014–2020, Priority Axis I Modern Economy, Measure 1.4 Support for the innovation ecosystem, sub-measure: 1.4.2. Support for regional and local centres of creativity and innovation. The project was concluded at the end of 2023 with funding of over PLN 25 million.
