Ceremony of awarding the title of doctor honoris causa to Jordi Savall

The ceremony of awarding the title of doctor honoris causa of the University of Silesia to Jordi Savall will take place on Thursday, 18 November, 2021 at 7 p.m. The title was awarded by a resolution of the Senate of the University of Silesia of 26 October, 2021.

The supervisor in the procedure for awarding the title of doctor honoris causa is Prof. Adam Dziadek – Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, and the reviewers are: Prof. Lorenz Duftschmid, Marcin Trzęsiok, PhD, DLitt, Associate Professor of Academy of Music in Katowice and Ireneusz Gielata, PhD, DLitt, Associate Professor.

Jordi Savall

One of the most versatile musicians of his generation. The Catalan viola da gamba master saves neglected and forgotten music gems, restoring them for the joy of others. An outstanding musician and composer, one of the greatest interpreters of early music, especially renaissance and baroque, a representative of historically informed performance. An instrumentalist whose works are a source of emotions and delights, beauty and spirituality.

Jordi Savall was appointed the European Union Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue and received the title of UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2008.

Ceremony of awarding the title and a concert

The next part of the ceremony will consist in a concert of the honorary doctor. The participants will have the possibility to listen to the performance of: Jordi Savall, David Mayoral, Enrique Solinis.

Due to the limitations resulting from the epidemic situation, the ceremony will take place in a hybrid form, and the number of people present in the hall will be limited for common safety.

Please notify us of your willingness to participate in the event via the application form by 15 November, 2021. Participants are admitted to the event according to the registration order.

The University of Silesia is an accessible, universal and open university. If you have any special needs that we can apply during the event, please let us know – we will try to implement appropriate solutions.

Accompanying event

Jordi Savall together with the band Hespèrion XXI will also perform on 19 November, 2021 at 6 pm at the Municipal Theater in Gliwice during the grand finale of this year’s edition of All’improvviso. The concert will be filled with a fascinating programme referring to the culture of the Iberian Peninsula “Folias, Romanescas & Canarios”.
