ABOUT THE INSTITUTE |
The Institute of Mathematics at the University of Silesia in Katowice is one of the six research institutes of the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), established on October 1, 2019, as a result of a reorganization of the University’s structure. Prior to this, the Institute was part of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. The Institute conducts scientific research in various fields, including:
Since 1985, the Institute of Mathematics has been publishing its own journal, Annales Mathematicae Silesianae, publishing research and review articles in the broadly understood theoretical and applied mathematics. Since 2021, the journal has been indexed in the Emerging Sources Citation Index, one of the citation indices available through the Web of Science database. The staff of the Institute of Mathematics, along with collaborating academic teachers from the FST, conduct classes both in mathematical studies and in various other fields of study, such as computer science, biology, biotechnology, environmental protection, chemistry, physics, mechatronics, pedagogy, and human resource management, as well as in the Doctoral School. Moreover, they supervise and review bachelor’s and master’s theses and serve on habilitation and doctoral committees. One of the most significant teaching achievements of the Institute of Mathematics at US in recent years is the implementation and development of a double degree program in cooperation with the University of L’Aquila (Italy). This program, titled Realmaths – International Double Msc Degree Programme in Mathematics for Real World Applications, allows participants to obtain diplomas in Mathematics from both universities. Among the most important cyclical events organized or co-organized by the Institute of Mathematics, the following should be mentioned:
