Two USil representatives—Prof. Tomasz Pietrzykowski, Vice-Rector for International and Domestic Cooperation; and Adam Wojtaszek, PhD, DLitt, Assoc. Prof., Director of the Institute of Linguistics—went on a study visit to Shenyang, China.
The visit was to hold meetings with representatives of two universities in the Liaoning region. During their stay in Shenyang, Prof. T. Pietrzykowski and Prof. A. Wojtaszek met with representatives from Dalian Maritime University—who had travelled to Shenyang specifically for this meeting—and visited Northeastern University in Shenyang, a long-standing partner of the University of Silesia. During their visit to NEU, USil representatives met with staff from the Foreign Studies College, an institution with which we have been running a joint double Master’s degree programme for several years now. They also established a new connection with the College of Sciences.
The meetings covered issues related to the organisation of the next double degree agreement—this time with Dalian Maritime University—and the visit of thirty students of the degree programme in English Studies: Translation and Interpreting with Chinese to Dalian this autumn, which has been made possible thanks to a Chinese government scholarship secured by Prof. Li Yang, who collaborates with the University of Silesia. The Dean of the Foreign Studies College was given the USil diplomas for the Chinese students who completed their Master’s degree studies last year under the double degree agreement between the University of Silesia and NEU. Moreover, promising discussions were held with representatives of the natural sciences at NEU, likely to lead to new joint research and teaching projects in the future.
USil representatives also took part in the International Conference of Liaoning Province’s Sister Cities in Shenyang, China. They accompanied the delegation from the Marshal’s Office and the Silesian Regional Assembly, representing the region’s universities. The conference provided an opportunity to showcase achievements and exchange experiences among participants from around the world.
The study visit took place as part of the Task 5.2: ‘Strengthening USil presence and visibility on the world stage. Organising meetings for management, academic, and administrative staff at foreign universities’ under the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange project ‘Stay with US – Professionalisation of the Offer of the University of Silesia in Katowice for Scientists from Abroad’.
