Science Closer to You - promotion of the effects of scientific and research activity of the University of Silesia
Implementation under the programme of the Ministry of Education and Science – „Social responsibility of science”.
Project implementation period: from 1 October 2020 to 31 March 2022
Value of co-financing from the Ministry of Education and Science: PLN 410,000.
The goal of the project is to promote the scientific achievements, work of scientists, as well as research and development work conducted at the University.
The project assumes the implementation of 3 main tasks
- Promotional campaign about scientific achievements, as well as scientific research and development work conducted at the University
The planned activities include running a promotional campaign about scientific achievements, as well as scientific research and development work both in multimedia and traditional forms (website, social network sites, cooperating institutions, partner cities, catalogues/leaflets), and by designing an academic board game intended to familiarise users with the scientists’ work and to promote science.
- Organisation of a series of science-to-business meetings and conferences to promote scientific achievements, work of scientists, as well as conducted scientific research and development work
The activity is intended to create a space for the exchange of knowledge and experiences between the scientific circle and representatives of business environment, local, regional and metropolitan authorities, as well as self-government employees
- Participation in fair and exhibition events
The task is intended to promote knowledge about the results of research work created at the University of Silesia and change the image of the University as a teaching-only unit, as well as, ultimately, also to support the process of knowledge transfer to the social and economic environment and build knowledge-based economy. Participation in international events, including the presentation of possibilities, technologies, conducted research study programmes, will significantly contribute to promoting information about the role and importance of scientific research in economic and social development of the region and the country. Participation of the University of Silesia in the most important events promoting the ideas of science for business and business for science translates to supporting and communicating the processes of innovativeness and commercialisation of the results of scientific research, as well as promoting good practices in the field of innovations.
The project “Science Closer to You – promotion of the effects of scientific and research activity of the University of Silesia” is in line with a number of activities undertaken by the University of Silesia for science communication and implementation of the social responsibility of the University of Silesia.

METROPOLITAN CONFERENCE
Metropolitan Prospects for a Better Urban Future – Ideas, Inhabitants, Institutions
Organizers: Institute of Sociology – Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Silesia in Katowice, Observatory of Urban and Metropolitan Processes
Date: 10 February 2022
Place: Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Silesia in Katowice, ul. Bankowa 11, 40-007 Katowice
The organization of the conference on metropolitan issues results from several premises. First, it will soon be four years since the establishment of the Metropolis GZM, the first metropolitan union sanctioned by an act of the Polish Parliament. It is therefore worth taking a look at the first effects of this unprecedented institutional innovation in the Polish local government system. The second premise is the organization of the next meeting of the Metropolitan Scientific Network, whose members meet regularly in different Polish metropolitan areas, so after Gdańsk and Poznań, the time has come for Katowice, the capital of the GZM Metropolis. The third important premise for choosing the time and place of the conference is the organization of the 11th session of the World Urban Forum in Katowice in June 2022, the United Nations Conference (UN Habitat WUF11) devoted to the future of cities. The title of our conference is a direct reference to the title of the UN summit in Katowice “Transforming Our Cities for a Better Urban Future”.
Although, in the current conditions, metropolises do not occupy a leading position in the political agenda of the Polish authorities, they are laboratories from which the future of our societies emerges. This applies both to climate challenges and the search for new models of living, working, and generating resources that would reduce the negative impact on the environment, and at the same time allow inhabitants to maintain a high quality of life, including in crisis situations, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the issue of embedding the metropolis as a territorial management institution in the Polish local government system still remains unsolved. There is ongoing work on the new National Urban Policy, and local government officials in different Polish metropolitan areas propose their own metropolitan bills. As is presented above, metropolises concentrate – like a lens – most of today’s challenges. The aim of the conference is therefore to give the members of the Metropolitan Scientific Network, representing a variety of scientific disciplines and research approaches, the opportunity to express their views on these diverse challenges without favoring any dimension of metropolisation. Therefore, the thematic scope of the conference can be described by 3 x “I”, i.e. ideas, inhabitants, institutions.
The conference covers the following themes:
1. Metropolises in theoretical dimension: terms, concepts, theories, future perspectives.
2. Metropolises as complex social systems: practices, actions (bottom-up), participation, social innovations.
3. Metropolises in institutional perspective: regulations, competences, management, policies.
The conference keynote speakers are:
prof. Mariona Tomàs Fornés (Barcelona, Spain)
prof. Eric Champagne (Ottawa, Canada)
prof. Christophe Chabrot (Lyon, France)
Organizational issues:
The conference is planned as an event based on meetings and face-to-face discussions. Depending on the sanitary situation and safety regulations, the conference may take a hybrid or a completely remote form. Final information on the form of the conference will be provided by the organizers at least one month before the conference date.
The participation in the conference is free of charge.
Should you be interested in presenting a conference paper, please send the abstract in English (1000 to 1500 characters) to: obserwatoriumMiasto@us.edu.pl, with the following email title: Abstract Submission – Metropolitan Conference 2022. The University of Silesia in Katowice at the 13th European Economic Congress – summary
On September 20-22 this year the 13th European Economic Congress was held at the International Congress Center in Katowice.
As part of the event, in addition to extremely interesting lectures by representatives of the University of Silesia in Katowice, incl. prof. dr hab. Tomasz Pietrzykowski – Vice-Rector for international and national cooperation, the Office for Cooperation with the Economy of the University of Silesia prepared a stand which presented the latest scientific solutions for society and the economy.
These were, among others:
- oscillatory vest – it creates intense vibrations, which are transmitted onto the chest. Owing to this, the patient has the opportunity to expectorate respiratory tract secretions. The vest has vibration generators at the front and back of the torso. The vibration generators are controlled by means of a mobile application, which also allows for individual adaptation of therapy to the patient. The vest has an autonomous power supply, thanks to which it can be used under various conditions and during everyday activities. Oscillatory vests are used in particular for chronic respiratory diseases.
- game for respiratory tract rehabilitation – it can be used during inhalation. Young children in particular are afraid of the inhalation process and the inhalation mask. The game uses a small radio sensor, which allows to control the game displayed on tablets or smartphones by breathing. The sensor works with many types of masks with medium oxygen concentration. This form of inhalation allows to overcome children’s fear and perform a full therapeutic session. The system is completely mobile.
Also present in the exhibition area of the University of Silesia were PhD students – representing the Foundation for the Protection of Cultural Goods and Centralne Laboratorium Pomiarowo – Badawcze Sp. z o.o., who promoted the idea of cooperation between science and the business environment on their own example.
The 13th European Economic Congress is the largest business event in Central and Eastern Europe, being a place of contact for representatives of the world of business, science and politics.
