Katowice is an evolving heart of the Silesia region in Southern Poland, previously known as the place of heavy industry, coal, and steel. Currently, Katowice has undergone a huge transformation into a modern and green capital of a metropolitan area with more than two million inhabitants. The Culture Zone, the monumental building of the National Symphony Orchestra of the Polish Radio, and the emblematic sport and entertainment hall „Spodek” (called that because of its shape of a flying saucer) are landmarks that make Katowice a well-known place in Poland and Europe. Katowice was also a stage of significant moments in the modern history of Poland and Eastern Europe, with Solidarity protests which gave rise to the process of achieving freedom from the communist regime in Poland in the decades of the 20th century.

A location at the heart of the metropolitan area makes Katowice easily accessible by plane (Katowice and Kraków-Balice airports), train, or car.
