In case of research conducted simultaneously at two universities, it is possible for both of them to confer the doctorate simultaneously as well. This increases the prestige accompanying the degree and its recognition. Above all, however, an international doctorate reflects the actual state of affairs, i.e. the significant contribution of both universities to the young scientist’s education and research.
Such a form of granting a doctorate might be proposed by an institution (e.g. in the form of an international doctoral school), the supervisor or the doctoral student themselves. There is no one formalised path or a set of procedures for an international doctorate – it is an individual solution, depending on both universities, the jurisdictions within which they function (e.g. there are virtually no objections in Polish law), particular needs for cooperation and their sources of financing. In every single instance, international doctorate is based on a bilateral (or multilateral) agreement made by the institutions engaged.
We would like to encourage everyone to participate in such cooperation. The Doctoral School at the University of Silesia is prepared and will be happy to support this type of initiative.
