University of Silesia in Katowice

The Charity Concert “City of Science for Ukraine” will take place on 25 March 2022 open-air and on the rooftop of the Faculty of Humanities. The goal of the event carried out by 7 public universities of the European City of Science Katowice 2024 consortium is to support the fundraiser for the needs of students from Ukraine and their families.

Apart from artistic performance, we have also planned other activities, including science communication ones. Both adults and children can participate in them. The event is addressed to all people regardless of age.

Participants will have an opportunity to take part in science shows and listen to a debate that will cover the topics on challenges related to refugees in Poland and how to effectively provide them material and psychological aid.

Forms of aid

The concert “City of Science for Ukraine” is primarily aimed at supporting the ones who suffered due to the war in Ukraine. All collected funds will be donated for the needs of Ukrainian students, PhD students, and their families.

Everyone participating in the event can help in many different ways:

• donate money for the main fundraiser carried out by the University of Silesia on zrzutka.pl. The fundraiser works all the time;
• donate money for the fundraiser via payment terminal within the concert area or the QR codes located within the concert area, which will redirect a used on the website of the mentioned fundraiser;
• take part in a charity auction with numerous items including artworks by students and employees;
• donate items to our collection points. People from Ukraine often lack hygiene products, clothes, and food; thus, during the concert, you may donate such items to a dedicated car. Soon we will publish a detailed list of the most needed items.

Programme

The Concert “City of Science for Ukraine” will feature activities both outdoors and indoors in the building of the Faculty of Humanities (ul. Uniwersytecka 4 in Katowice). This charity event will last several hours and, apart from art shows, there will be other activities as well. Part of them requires prior registration via the registration form.

4.00 p.m. – vernissage of the exhibition (registration is necessary);

4.15 p.m. – screening of the movie Donbas (2018) by Sergei Loznitsa (registration is necessary); before the screening, Prof. Krystyna Doktorowicz, Associate Professor, the Dean of Krzysztof Kieślowski Film School will deliver a lecture;

5.00 p.m. – debate “What next?” featuring Prof. Yuliana Palagnyuk (political scientist), Rafała Cekiera, PhD (expert in migration) from the Faculty of Social Sciences; Marek Migalski, PhD, DLitt (euro-deputy), Associate Professor from the Faculty of Social Sciences; Łukasz Jach, PhD, from the Faculty of Social Sciences; Małgorzata Myl, PhD (expert in international law) from the Faculty of Law and Administration; and Prof. Tadeusz Sławek (literary scholar and philosopher) from the Faculty of Humanities. Participants will have an opportunity to take part in science shows and listen to a debate that will cover the topics on challenges related to refugees in Poland and how to effectively provide them material and psychological aid. The event will be translated into Ukrainian and Polish sign language.

6.15 p.m. – speech of the Mayor of Katowice and the Rectors of universities in Katowice and singing the national anthem of Ukraine by Katarzyna Bakalczuk-Kłosowska, an opera singer of the Zhytomyr Regional Philharmony and the Regional Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater, and the PhD student of the National Music Academy of Ukraine;

6.25 p.m. – concert of Polish-Ukrainian band DAGADANA on the rooftop of the Faculty of Humanities;

7.30 p.m. – auction and piano concert in dark by a blind musician Kaja Kosowska (registration is necessary).

• “Czarnobyl zatopiony w czasie – 25 lat później” [Chernobyl sunken in time – 25 years later] – display of photographs by Grzegorz Machnik (register) | 4.40-5.10 p.m.;
• science shows in the Scienceville, i.e. activities for adults and children – a zone in the form of stands related to the Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE | until 7.30 p.m.;
• Ukraine Station – zone featuring experts for academic discussions, consulting and answers to difficult questions about the war. In this place, scientists will have an opportunity to educate the residents of Katowice on how to provide help, cope with the current situation, and prepare for a future life with Ukrainian citizens.
