Guest profile

Michael Fowler is an independent researcher whose work is interdisciplinary; his projects combine science and art in search of innovative contributions to both disciplines. He is experienced in terms of strategies for the development of arts&science projects, science communication, and social programmes implemented in the context of German universities. Originally, he studied music in Australia and the USA and pursued an international concert career as a pianist and electronic musician working with some of the most notable composers of the late 20th century, including Karlheinz Stockhausen, Steve Reich and Milton Babbitt. He has won acclaim from critics, including those writing for The New York Times, Atlanta Constitution-Journal, Birmingham News, and Sydney Morning Herald.  He has published on topics including the semiotics of Japanese garden design, concepts of sound and listening in architecture and landscape architecture. He is primarily interested in the examination, analysis, composition and design of exemplary sound-space. He utilised techniques from mathematics and AI to represent indeterminate musical spaces in the scores by John Cage. His artistic practice has also included the presentation and design of site-specific immersive sound installations that have been staged in Australia, China and Japan. He contributed greatly to the establishment and development of the Science Gallery Berlin at Technische Universität Berlin. He is a graduate of the Australian Research Council and an alumnus of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung research fellowship programme.
