Extra retake examination
Remember that in accordance with the 2021 Rules and Regulations of Studies at the University of Silesia, you have the right to an additional crediting date and a retake exam. In relation to each subject you have the right to the 1st date and the 2nd date. This applies to both exams and credits from practicals, labs, etc.
An extra retake credit and extra retake examination are not automatically granted to every student who does not receive a positive grade during the 2nd date!
Extra retake examination is granted:
- only based on a motivated (properly substantiated) student’s application
- and only when a given case can be considered justified – which is assessed by the relevant dean
The Rules and Regulations of Studies do not indicate in which situations we can talk about “justified cases” in which the student should be granted the right to an extra retake examination. Decisions in this regard are left to the deans.
Examples of reasons that can be invoked in the extra retake examination application may include:
- the exam/credit was conducted inconsistently with the course syllabus, e.g.:
- it was supposed to be a written exam, and it ended up being an oral one;
- the exam covered material that went beyond what was indicated in the syllabus;
- the exam/credit was conducted in conditions that make it impossible to concentrate, e.g. heavy renovation works were underway in the faculty building at that time.
Before you submit the application for an extra retake examination, think about what extraordinary circumstances could justify granting you an additional examination date. You must describe these reasons in the request!
- Delivery route:
- you can submit your application in USOSweb (student’s section → application → submit a new application), and if it is not possible:
- you can also send the request to the dean’s office from the mailbox you provided as the contact address at the university;
- finally, you can also submit the request in writing to the relevant dean’s office.
- You must make it on time within 5 working days from the date of announcement of the results of the credit or exam (if you are late, you must submit an application for reinstatement of the deadline at the same time as the application, see Administrative decisions and settlings – worth knowing).
- The request must be properly substantiated (see above).
- If this is important for you, please indicate in the request that you would like one of the following persons to participate in the extra retake examination:
- a representative of a student government body;
- year tutor / practicals group tutor;
- USil Student and PhD Student Ombudsperson
It should be issued immediately, and in any case not later than 14 days from the date of submitting the request.
Within this special term, your knowledge and skills will be verified not by one tutor, but by a special commission appointed by the dean.
The commission is made up of:
- Dean as head of the commission / Deputy Dean for Education and Students / authorised academic;
- and, in addition, 2 specialists in the field covered by the credit or exam;
- and if you applied for it, also a representative of the student government body / year tutor / practicals group tutor / USil Student and PhD Student Ombudsperson.
Within this special term, your knowledge and skills will be verified not by one tutor, but by a special commission appointed by the dean.
Basically, it has the same form as the last date of crediting or resit examination, unless the dean orders otherwise.
So if the retake exam was in the form of a test, the extra retake examination will most likely look the same. However, the already mentioned commission will be responsible for preparing and checking the test.
If the retake exam had an oral form, you will be answering in front of the whole commission during the extra retake examination.
