Sylwia Giza, MSc Eng., PhD student at the Faculty of Law and Administration, won the 6th regional edition of the Three Minute Thesis® (3MT®) competition.

3MT® is a global competition in science communication licensed by the University of Queensland (Australia). It was organised for the 6th time in Silesia. The competitors, PhD students representing various scientific disciplines, are to present the issues related to their doctoral thesis to the audience and jury. They have to do it within three minutes and must not use any additional props or aids except a single, static slide displayed from the beginning of the speech to its end.

The Silesian edition of the competition is organised by the Science Popularisation Centre of the Silesian University of Technology. The Silesian edition of the competition is open to PhD students of universities from the Silesian Voivodeship or branches of the Polish Academy of Sciences located in Silesia, as well as PhD students implementing their theses at the National Institute of Oncology in Gliwice.

The final took place on Friday, 18 November 2023 in Gliwice, and featured 10 people representing the Silesian University of Technology, the Medical University of Silesia, and the University of Silesia. The competition was won by Sylwia Giza, a PhD student from the University of Silesia. Her speech ‘I know you’re watching me! Digital advertising and Privacy’ was dedicated to showing the issue of digital personal data protection in profiling for the sake of Internet advertisement. The USil PhD student—and engineer as well as MA in law—included two perspectives related to profiling: technical and legal. She presented its scale and indicated difficulties regarding attempts at its legal regulation.

Sylwia Giza is a PhD student at the Doctoral School at the University of Silesia. She is preparing her doctoral dissertation on personal data processing in the process of personalised online advertising, supervised by Mariusz Jagielski, PhD, DLitt, Assoc. Prof.
