Information about organization of classes

Classes are typically conducted face-to-face. Some classes are scheduled remotely – language courses and Academic English (some groups). Also some classes in English and for doctoral students in the “Implementation Doctorate” program, as well as some facultative and specialized classes, are also being held remotely.

All remote classes are organized via MS Teams, using university accounts, which each doctoral student must have active.

The first classes begin on October 6th or according to the posted schedule. Facultative and specialized classes start no earlier than October 13th.

Methodology of Research

compulsory classes for 1st year doctoral students

The module consists of 30 hours of classes. Each doctoral student completes three 10-hour courses within the module (some courses have 20 hours).

Doctoral students in the humanities must complete three classes of their choice.

Doctoral students in the natural sciences and engineering and technology must complete a joint course (with Prof. Jerzy Łuczka) and two classes of their choice.

Doctoral students in the social sciences must complete a joint course (with Prof. Agnieszka Turska-Kawa) and two classes of their choice.

Doctoral students in artistic disciplines must complete the Artistic Research module instead of the Research Methodology module, at dates to be individually agreed upon with their instructors.

Doctoral students in the “Implementation Doctorate” program must complete a joint course and at least one other course specific to their discipline.

Teaching in higher educational schools

The module consists of two blocks

  1. The common part for all doctoral students in mixed (disciplinary) groups.
  2. The specialized part: groups in disciplines or in connection with some students’ degrees.

English language course

extracurricular activities

First-year doctoral students complete a placement test (access available upon request – contact the SD office or the module coordinator).

Doctoral students of the following years should discuss participation guidelines with the module coordinator.

Classes are held remotely on Wednesdays, starting October 8th, in groups at the appropriate level.

Academic English

open for all doctoral students, suggested on the second year

Classes begin the week of October 6-10 and are conducted remotely or in-person, depending on the group. Groups are divided according to discipline. Please log in to the group corresponding to your discipline.

Note: Doctoral students in Literary Studies, Polish Studies, and Cultural Studies share two groups, divided according to their English language proficiency.

Intellectual property law

open for all, suggested for doctoral studend on the second year

In the winter semester, classes are held for all groups, except for doctoral students in artistic disciplines. Classes are divided into the following groups:

  • Natural Sciences, Engineering, and Technology
  • Humanities, Theology, and Arts, and Social Sciences (two groups, one of which is delivered remotely)
  • Implementation Doctorate program doctoral students (remote classes)
  • English-language group (remote classes)

Optional courses (facultative and specialized)

offer for all doctoral students

The Doctoral School offers facultative and specialized courses. Facultative courses are modules that introduce a specific topic or develop general or soft skills. They are open to all doctoral students. Specialized courses require specific prior knowledge and are open only to doctoral students in specific disciplines. During their education, doctoral students must complete optional courses for:

  • at least 9 ECTS – cohorts of 2020/2021, 2021/2022, and 2022/2023
    at least 8 ECTS – cohorts of 2023/2024
    specialized courses for at least 4 ECTS and facultative courses for at least 2 ECTS – cohorts of 2024/2025 and 2025/2026

Alternatively, ECTS can be earned for optional courses by completing:

  • classes as part of Transform4Europe Week
    classes for doctoral students at other universities

Please note: Doctoral students register at the beginning of the year for facultative and specialized courses for both semesters. Additional registration before the summer semester only allows for schedule-related adjustments.

Doctoral seminar

No registration, doctoral students have been entered into USOS. Please verify your current status in USOS. If some of the hours are to be assigned to an auxiliary supervisor, please contact the supervisor or the auxiliary supervisor by email.

Expert tutoring

individual tutorings

Each doctoral student is expected to complete three tutoring sessions throughout their entire education. Classes scheduled for the 2025/2026 academic year with academic teachers employed at the University of Silesia are already available in USOS – please verify and report any changes.

Classes with individuals from outside the University of Silesia must be scheduled in advance – details will be announced soon.
