What is a mid-term evaluation?

The mid-term evaluation is an evaluation of the implementation of an individual research plan, which each PhD candidate of a doctoral school takes place in the middle of his / her education. The evaluation is carried out by a three-person commission composed of at least one person with the degree of a habilitated doctor or the title of professor in the discipline in which the doctoral dissertation is being prepared, employed outside the unit running the Doctoral School.

The evaluation ends with a positive or negative result. A negative assessment is a basis for removing a PhD candidate from the list of doctoral students of the doctoral school. A positive result of the mid-term evaluation means that from the month following the evaluation of the PhD candidate’s scholarship, it amounts to at least 57 percent of the minimum salary of the professor (before the evaluation, it is at least 37 percent). After the mid-term evaluation, the PhD candidate may also be employed as an academic teacher, and then he will receive a reduced doctoral scholarship (up to 40% of the amount allocated to the PhD candidate after the mid-term evaluation).

The manner of conducting the mid-term evaluation is specified in the regulations of the doctoral school.

Evaluation committee at the Doctoral School

The mid-term evaluation committee is established in the first year of doctoral study. It is referred to as an evaluation committee because it evaluates the PhD candidate’s work after each year of education.

After the end of the first year, the Commission evaluates the individual research plan submitted by the PhD candidate. The Commission may then give a pass, fail, or conditional assessment.

A mid-term evaluation takes place after the end of the second year, as described below.

After the end of the third year, the Commission evaluates the further implementation of IRP, i.e., progress and the degree of preparation of the doctoral dissertation.

The course of the mid-term evaluation at the Doctoral School

The primary documents in the mid-term evaluation are the individual research plan and the report on its implementation – more on the Individual research plan page: https://us.edu.pl/szkola-doktorska/en/indywidualny-plan-badawczy/

A PhD candidate initiates the mid-term evaluation by applying to the Dean of the Doctoral School. Application form:

APPLICATION FOR MID-TERM EVALUATION

After September 30, if the PhD candidate does not apply, the Dean of the Doctoral School initiates the evaluation.

The assessment is in three stages:

  1. The committee reviews the documentation submitted by the PhD candidate (individual research plan, report on the implementation of education and individual research plan, and publications and other documents attached to it).
  2. The PhD candidate presents his / her research work at the meeting of the scientific council of the institute of the relevant discipline; the members of the evaluation committee and the supervisor participate in this part of the session.
  3. The evaluation committee decides on the outcome of the mid-term evaluation in a separate meeting. In addition, the committee may request a meeting with the PhD candidate or his supervisor to obtain explanations.

Assessments carried out after October 1, 2021, will be carried out based on the new Regulations and, therefore a different order:

  1. Presentation to the institute council.
  2. Interview with the PhD candidate (obligatory) and with the supervisor (optional).
  3. Final meeting and establishing the evaluation.

After the mid-term evaluation is completed, the evaluation committee completes and signs the protocol. Protocol form:

The 2021 mid-term evaluation scenario

To facilitate the course of the entire procedure, the Doctoral School has developed a scenario for the course of the mid-term evaluation, taking into account the details of the PhD candidate’s presentation to the institute council. We encourage all persons who will be involved in the proceedings in 2021 to read this document. The scenario is subject to modifications. Therefore, all PhD candidates participating in this assessment must read it.
