Procedure for appointing evaluation committees for 1st year doctoral students in the academic year 2025/2024

1.

PhD supervisors – by May 7 – present a proposal of 5 candidates to the doctoral student’s evaluation committee.

Requirements for the list of candidates:

  1. At least 2 candidates are academic teachers employed at the University of Silesia, holding a Doctor of Science (dr hab.) degree or the title of professor.
  2. At least 2 candidates are
    • academic teachers employed at another Polish university or research unit, holding a Doctor of Science (dr hab.) degree or the title of professor in the discipline in which the PhD student prepares his or her doctoral dissertation or
    • academic teachers employed at a foreign university or research unit, who has significant achievements in the field of scientific issues covered by the doctoral dissertation
  3. The fifth candidate may be from the University of Silesia (1) or from another university (2). This candidate from the University of Silesia may be a doctor (PhD).

The task of the supervisor is to obtain preliminary approval of these candidates for work as a member of the doctoral student’s evaluation committee, with the information that the final selection of three of the candidates will belong to the director of the institute; candidates for work in the evaluation committee should be informed about the committee’s operation: https://us.edu.pl/szkola-doktorska/ocena-srodokresowa/

A list of these candidates in the table (attachment: komisje ewaluacyjne dla doktorantów – formularz dla promotorów) should be sent by May 7th to the Doctoral School’s office to Ms. Agnieszka Szewczyk (agnieszka.a.szewczyk@us.edu.pl, szkola.doktorska@us.edu.pl).

2.

The Doctoral School’s office sends lists of candidates to directors of institutes. A director of an institute chooses 3 persons from the presented list. The remaining candidates are treated as reserve members and will be appointed in the event that a change in committee member is necessary.

If the institute director has doubts about the impartiality of any of the individuals proposed by the supervisor, he or she will submit these concerns in a response to the Doctoral School office. If the doubts concern more than one individual and it is therefore impossible to appoint three members as planned, the institute director will submit their proposed committee member. This decision and the selection of specific members must be justified.

3.

The Doctoral School’s Office contacts selected persons and asks for consent. After approval, the dean of the Doctoral School appoints the committees by order, and the office informs them about the work schedule.
