From among the laureates of the 13th edition of the Rector’s Distinctions competition – 11 female and male students and 8 female and doctoral students – the academic community chose those who were awarded the title of Student and Doctoral Student of the Year. Voting took place via the USOS system, in which everyone could cast one vote.
All of the laureates were honored at the 13th gala of awarding distinctions, which took place on 17 November.
Małgorzata Poszwa from the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Silesia became the Student of the Year, while the title of Doctoral Student of the Year was awarded to Marlena Drapalska-Grochowicz from the Faculty of Law and Administration.

Małgorzata Poszwa
She received the Rector’s Distinction in the 13th edition of the competition for initiating and developing student life as a law student at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Silesia.
Since 2017, she has been an active member of the Student Government, and since 2020, the chairman of the University Council of the Student Government and the coordinator representing the Silesian Voivodeship in the Students’ Parliament of the Republic of Poland.
She participated in the organisation of the Faculty of Law and Administration Open Day (2018, 2019), as well as in the events such as: “14th Conference of Youth” – Youth Climate Summit (2018) and “Śląskie na Śląskim Fest” (2018) on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Silesian Voivodeship, 50th anniversary of the University of Silesia and 100th anniversary of the Polish Bar.
Co-organiser of many student projects and events, including: “Mental Health Marathon” (2021), “Physical Health Marathon” (2021). “Student’s Laurel” (2020), “Student’s Day” (2019), “Prom of the Faculty of Law and Administration” (2019), “Students warming party of the Faculty of Law and Administration” (2018 and 2019), “Mid-studies party of the University of Silesia” (2020).
Her passion is student self-management and dance.

Marlena Drapalska-Grochowicz
She received the Rector’s Distinction in the 13th edition of the competition for scientific achievements and social activity, including for the academic community as a doctoral student in the discipline of law at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Silesia.
She has many scientific achievements, is the author or co-author of 12 scientific articles and 3 book chapters. She implements an original grant from the National Science Centre entitled Reconstruction of the category of “closeness” in the Polish legal system. She was the speaker at 10 international conferences and 15 national conferences.
She co-organised several scientific and popular science events. She is socially involved in activities for the legal protection of animals, and since 2017 she has been the auxiliary supervisor of the Animal Rights Science Club which is the first of its kind in Poland.
She co-created the structure of the Office of the Student and PhD Student Ombudsman of the University of Silesia, in which she acts as an attorney, handling cases and actively involving in the development of this office.
In her free time, she deepens her interests in art – she paints with watercolours and photographs. She is interested in the history of art, especially painting of the second half of the 20th century and music (especially jazz and world music, but also progressive rock).
