Candidates with special educational needs

The Faculty Admission Committee (WKR – Wydziałowa Komisja Rekrutacyjna) may modify the admission procedure for a candidate with health-related special educational needs only if the admission to a given programme is based on other criteria than the grades on the candidate’s certificate or diploma.
Each candidate’s situation is considered by the Faculty Admission Committee on the individual basis, in accordance with the idea of equal opportunities and rational adjustment of the admission procedure to the candidate’s health-related needs.
In order to organize interviews or exams for such candidates, the Faculty Admission Committee cooperates with the Student Service Centre (COS – Centrum Obsługi Studentów).
For candidates with special educational needs whose health condition does not enable them to participate in the admission procedure in the form specified in the admission criteria for a given programme, the Head of the Faculty Admission Committee, after consulting the Head of the Student Service Centre, modifies the form of the admission procedure accordingly.
The Head of the Student Service Centre assesses the candidate’s application and suggests possible forms of adjustment on the basis of the following documents submitted by the candidate:
1) questionnaire for candidates with special educational needs including the candidate’s request to modify the form of the exams,
2) up-to-date confirmation of disability or an equivalent document or doctor’s opinion, or a certificate issued by the psychologist of the Student Service Centre if the candidate applies for adjustment of the admission procedure for a different reason than a physical disability and does not possess a relevant confirmation or doctor’s opinion.
Information concerning the candidate’s health is under special protection under the Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46/EC (GDPR), and under the Information Security Policy of the University of Silesia, introduced by the Rector’s Decree no. 153 of 15th October 2018, with subsequent amendments.

In response to the candidate’s application, the following forms of adjustment may be offered:
1) participation of third parties (e.g. the personal assistant of the candidate with a disability);
2) using special equipment (e.g. a computer, a Braille ruler, an FM system);
3) changing the venue where the admission procedure takes place for one without architectural barriers;
4) prolonging the time of the exam;
5) participation of a sign-language interpreter;
6) taking a written exam using a computer with specialist software;
7) receiving the exam questions printed in larger font;
8) receiving the questions in writing during an oral exam;
9) replacing an oral exam with a written one or the other way round;
10) having short breaks during a written exam;
11) changing the time and venue of the exam due to the candidate’s health condition.

The candidate may apply for other forms of adjustment of the admission procedure than those listed above if this is justified by his/her health condition or the specificity of the disability.
