(English) Team Leader: Wojciech Wyrzykowski, PhD
Research scope:
In 2014, the Research Team for Economic and Commercial Law started an international project called “The Evolution of Private Law”. The project concentrates on amendments to private law in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, demonstrating the influence of European Law on domestic legal orders and the role of the national legislator in implementing and establishing laws. The project has resulted in permanent cooperation between universities throughout Central and Eastern European, mainly from Slovakia, Ukraine and the Czech Republic.
As part of this cooperation, the Team has organised several conferences and published collections of papers. The members of the Team have enjoyed many opportunities to participate actively in conferences abroad, publish scientific papers abroad and participate in projects financed by foreign institutions. Seven conferences were organised in Katowice (2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2020, 2022, 2024), with guests from the following universities: Pavol Josef Šafarik University in Košice, Comenius University in Bratislava, Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University in Ivano-Frankivsk, Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University, Yaroslav Mudryi University in Kharkiv, Masaryk University Brno, Palacký University in Olomouc, European University Viadrina Frankfurt/Oder and Universita degli Studi di Milano. Part of the research results, primarily concerning company law, contract law, bankruptcy law and new technologies, were documented in six collective monographs in the series The Evolution of Private Law (2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2020, 2023).
(English) Team Leader: Sławomir Tkacz, PhD, DLitt, Associate Professor
Research Scope: The team conducts research on law and values, including broad philosophical and theoretical problems within jurisprudence. The research focuses on the axiological foundations of legal systems and the processes of valuing in the application of law, including legal argumentation. In particular, the team addresses issues of fairness and justice, as well as legal principles and their balancing. In this context, the team members address the topic of freedom of speech, its limitations concerning hate speech, as well as the admissibility of legislative interference in the sphere of rights and civil liberties. The team also examines issues related to the ethical dilemmas of law. Research is also conducted in a historical-legal context, particularly concerning Polish legal theory and philosophy during the interwar period (including L. Petrażycki and Sz. Rundstein).
The team members participate in international conferences (including the Congress of the International Association for Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy – IVR), departmental meetings, seminars and webinars (both in-person and online), presenting contributions that reflect the research conducted within the team. The team collaborates with national and international academic institutions on research topics that align with the interests of its members.

- Legal instruments for ensuring energy security
- Energy communities, energy cooperatives, energy clusters
- Competition law of the European Union
- Economic instruments in the Water Framework Directive, especially: polluter pays principle, principle of cost-recovery, water pricing
Research Scope:
Centre’s research covers topics in antitrust law and public law protection of public competition law. Besides the already stated, the Center’s research focuses on infrastructure sectors such as water economy, energetics and transportation. Due to its interdisciplinary scientific research, the Centre establishes increasingly more close scientific partnerships with a number of universities as well as independent specialists in various areas, including legal, technical and practical aspects. The platform created by the Centre’s research provides a secure space for exchanging scientific positions both in Poland and on international level, as the discussed areas constitute disciplines of interest to both humanities and technical academics. Currently, the Centre’s members take great interest in a transition process that has recently been accruing in the climate related areas – departure from a highcarbon economy and implementation of the postulate of climate neutrality, which requires changes on many levels, especially legal and social.
The Research Centre is actively involved in scientific international cooperation projects. Centre members Miroslaw Pawełczyk and Marlena Jankowska-Augustyn have published a number of articles and monographs in collaboration with scientists from foreign universities, including several publications in Routledge.
