Week #9: Three Cultures Week
Date: 26 February–3 March 2024
- Curator: Aniela Kucharska, PhD (University of Silesia in Katowice)
- Producer: Cecylia Tatoj, PhD (University of Silesia in Katowice)
Week #9 of 50 Weeks in the City of Science is Three Cultures Week. The event is part of the European City of Science programme, which will last throughout 2024.
Even though today it may seem impossible, there once was a country in Europe where three cultures and the three largest religions: Islam, Judaism, and Christianity co-existed together. Which country was it? It was Spain under the rule of Alfonso X of Castile whose approach to science, religion, and culture differed completely from the commonly adopted one at the time. This 13th-century Christian king was a supporter of religious tolerance and propagation of Jewish knowledge and Arabic scholars, while the capital of his country, Toledo, was one of the most important cities in Europe when it came to science. Today, we would like to come back to this state of affairs in Katowice – the European City of Science 2024. This is why we propose this extraordinary Three Cultures Week, during which you will be able to:
- tour the Centre of Culture and Dialogue ‘Doha’;
- get an original henna tattoo done;
- learn the basics of Arabic and Hebrew;
- taste the incredible Moroccan tea;
- enjoy a concert by an evangelical choir and a bandura performance;
- view interesting exhibitions, listen to fascinating lectures, and take part in thought-provoking debates.
We will show you that different cultures can not only co-exist but also intertwine and enrich each other. Three Cultures Week will prove that science and culture go well together and work towards a more peaceful world.
The programme might be changed!

For Jews and Christians, the place is considered to be the centre of the world, where, according to the Old Testament, Abraham was to sacrifice his son Isaac. In the 10th century BC, the Jews built their First Temple there – the dwelling place of Yahweh himself. Muslims, in turn, believe that it is from there that the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven on his horse Buraq, in the presence of Archangel Gabriel.

We Won’t Get Deported… The Jewish Resistance Fighters in Zagłębie Dąbrowskie is the first compilation presenting the fate of girls and boys of the Jewish underground in Zagłębie Dąbrowskie. The publication is the result of the activities of the Cukerman’s Gate Foundation related to the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the liquidation of the ghettos in Będzin-Kamionka and Sosnowiec-Środula.
There are 170 names and surnames once belonging to fighters from the ghettos in Będzin and Sosnowiec. Some cases present full biographies, others – a single sentence based on the only information that has survived. Members of the resistance movement opposed Hitler’s plans for the Holocaust in various ways. Sometimes, it was armed resistance; other times, it was escaping from occupied Poland, hiding or saving others.
The event is addressed to the youth and adults. The meeting will be hosted by a journalist – Dominika Szczawińska. The editors of the book, Karolina Jakoweńko and Tomek Grząślewicz from the Cukerman’s Gate Foundation, which has been protecting the heritage of the Jews from Zagłębie since 2009, will talk about the history of the Jewish resistance movement in Będzin and Sosnowiec.

In their work, the gentlemen combine traditional folk inspirations: Slavic, Balkan, Klezmer and Arabic with elements of improvisation and jazz, bringing out what is unique, true and beautiful. Does the fight against inequality and discrimination experienced by women contradict the defence of traditions, values and principles on which monotheistic systems are based? Is it possible to reconcile the pursuit of social progress with professing a religion that is not alien to the patriarchal vision of the world? Jewish, Christian and Muslim feminism are attitudes seeking compromise, combining tradition and modernity and going beyond dualistic thinking. What connects these trends? What is their effectiveness? What place do they occupy in contemporary religious thought and in the context of feminist movements? The lecture will try to encourage listeners to look for answers to these and other questions.
