Prof. Jean Nicod has died

It is with pain, sadness, and a sense of great loss
that we have received the news about the death of

 

Prof. Jean Nicod

 

holder of honorary doctorate degree of the University of Silesia (1994),
an outstanding geographer, geomorphologist, researcher of karstic phenomena,
and Mediterranean geomorphology,
the founder of the French school of karst geomorphology,
the creator of Association Française de Karstologie
(French Association of Karst Research) and its president between 1977-1986,
and later its honorary president; former president of
Commision de Phenomene Karstique du Comite National de Geographie
(Karst Phenomena Commission at the French National Geography Committee),
professor at the Aix-Marseille University between 1968-1989,
and retired professor between 198-1993,
associated with the University of Nice,
Corresponding Member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts,
the creator and editor of “Karstologia” and “Méditerranée” journals.

He will remain in our memories as a friend
of the University of Silesia,
meritorious for creation and implementation of scientific cooperation
between Polish and French geographers
and karstic phenomena researchers,
especially during the 1970s and 1980s,
a difficult time for Polish researchers.
