On 24 January 2024, a press briefing devoted to cooperation on the Scientific Programme for Silesia as part of the European City of Science Katowice 2024 was held at the Goldstein Villa in Katowice. The meeting was attended by Dariusz Wieczorek, Minister of Science, Marcin Krupa, PhD, Mayor of Katowice, Andrzej Dybczyński, Chair of the Łukasiewicz Research Network, rectors at the universities included in the Academic Consortium Katowice City of Science: Prof. Ryszard Koziołek (University of Silesia in Katowice, leader of the consortium), Prof. Władysław Szymański (Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice), Prof. Grzegorz Hańderek (Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice), Prof. Grzegorz Juras (Academy of Physical Education in Katowice.), Prof. Tomasz Szczepański, MD, PhD (Medical University of Silesia in Katowice), Prof. Eng. Celina Olszak (University of Economics in Katowice) as well as Tomasz Trawiński, PhD, DSc Eng., Assoc. Prof., Vice-Rector (Silesian University of Technology).
During the briefing, a letter of intent was signed regarding the establishment of the Scientific Programme for Silesia, which will be a multi-year cooperation project between universities belonging to the Academic Consortium Katowice City of Science. It assumes financing of scientific research aimed at solving the most important challenges of energy, economic, environmental and social transformation in the region. The goal is also, among others, strengthening the international visibility of universities, engaging social, business and local government partners in the implementation of research projects, as well as enabling students and PhD students to cooperate with experienced research staff. The programme will be implemented with the support of the Łukasiewicz Research Network. Detailed information about the project can be found in the information folder on the ISSUU platform.
The initiator and originator of the Scientific Programme for Silesia is Prof. Ryszard Koziołek, Rector of the University of Silesia. The substantive assumptions were developed by: Prof. Michał Daszykowski, Vice-Rector for Research and Finance of the University of Silesia and Prof. Eng. Marek Pawełczyk, Vice-Rector for Science and Development of the Silesian University of Technology.
The signatories of the letter are universities belonging to the Academic Consortium Katowice City of Science and the Łukasiewicz Research Network.
