Never before has December been so full of sicience in Katowice as in 2023. On 9December, the inauguration of the 7th edition of the Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE will take place, which will also be the opening of the celebrations of the European City of Science 2024.

Both events will begin in the Spodek Arena. The following will work on the final shape of the music and science show opening the European City of Science 2024 celebrations:

  • Miuosh –  rapper and music producer. In 2021, together with the ‘Śląsk’ Song and Dance Ensemble, he released an album ‘Pieśni współczesne’ [Modern Songs] with pieces inspired by folk songs;
  • Zbigniew Rokita – writer, journalist and reporter associated with the Jagiellonian University. In 2021, he won the Nike Literary Award for the book ‘Kajś. Opowieść o Górnym Śląsku’ [Somewhere. A story about Upper Silesia];
  • Jan Matuszyński, PhD – director of feature and documentary films associated with the Krzysztof Kieślowski Film School at the University of Silesia in Katowice. Creator of, among others, the films ‘The Last Family’ (2016) about the Beksiński family and ‘Leave no traces’ (2021) about the murder of Grzegorz Przemyk committed by the militia.
  • Mateusz Znaniecki – film director and actor, graduate of the Krzysztof Kieślowski Film School at the University of Silesia in Katowice, also associated with the Silesian Theatre in Katowice.
  • Dawid Tyszkowski – singer, composer and lyricist. He is a talented, sensitive artist of the young generation. He recently announced the premiere of his debut, long-playing album ‘Mój kot zaginął i już raczej nie wróci’ [‘My cat is missing and probably isn’t coming back] (published by FONOBO Label) and a concert tour promoting the album, which will take place in March 2024.
  • Julia Pietrucha – gained fame as a film and TV series actress. In April 2016, she independently released her debut album ‘Parsley’, inspired by a several-month-long trip around Asia. The album contained 15 original songs in a ballad-pop style, with folk elements and soothing sounds of the ukulele. The club tours that the artist embarked on in 2016 and 2017 with her musicians turned out to be a huge success. Tickets for most concerts sold out very quickly.
  • Natalia Grosiak  singer, songwriter and composer. She was also the leader of the band Mikromusic founded in 2002. She was part of many projects, co-founded the band Digit All Love, represented Poland in Melbourne at the Red Bull Music Academy, and collaborated with artists such as: Smolik, Miuosh, Sanah, Tymon Tymański and Nikola Kołodziejczyk. With Mikromusic she gave concerts abroad, among others in Japan, Romania, Lithuania and Ireland. Together with Mikromusic, she won the Fryderyk Award in 2020 in the ‘Poetic Music’ category.
  • Piotr Rogucki –  singer, composer, lyricist and actor. Co-founder of the KARAŚ/ROGUCKI tandem. Piotr has spent many years on stage with the band Coma, however, since 2020 he can only be seen in the KARAŚ/ROGUCKI band and on the big and small screen. You can see him in productions such as: ‘Wielka woda’ [Big water] (2022), ‘Minuta ciszy’ [A Minute of Silence] (2002), ‘Stulecie Winnych’ [Century of the Guilty] (2019), ‘39 i pół tygodnia’ [39 and a Half Weeks] (2019) czy ‘Gotowi na wszystko. Exterminator’ [Ready for Anything. Exterminator] (2017).
  • Mela Koteluk – singer, songwriter and composer. Winner of Fryderyk Awards in the categories ‘Debut of the year’, ‘Artist of the year’, ‘Album of the year – alternative pop’ and many other prestigious awards. She gained popularity, among others: thanks to the well-received album ‘Spadochron’ [Parachute], which was released in 2012. The second album ‘Migracje’ [Migration], released in 2014, consolidated the singer’s position, achieving the status of a double platinum album and repeating the success of her debut album. In 2018, the artist’s third album ‘Miwagaka’ [Snapshot] was released. It went gold and was awarded the Fryderyk Award 2019.  The latest release from 24 July 2020 is the album ‘Astronomia poety. Baczyński’ [Poet’s Astronomy. Baczyński] which was created in cooperation with the band Kwadrofonik. The album was awarded the Fryderyk Award 2021 in the ‘Album of the Year Poetic Music’ category, and in July 2023, a reissue of the album in a vinyl version was released, enriched with the previously unpublished song ‘Madrygał’ [Madrigal].

Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE

During the festival – under the slogan ‘Science will give us future’ – the celebrations of the European City of Science Katowice will officially begin. It will be the teaser for 2024, when every week in the capital of the Silesian Voivodeship will be filled with science.

ŚFN KATOWICE is an annual celebration of Silesian science, organised since 2016. Last year’s 6th edition attracted 48,000 people to the ICC, and up to 7,000 followed the online broadcast. For several years now, the festival has been gathering thousands of people hungry for knowledge. For couple of days, they have the opportunity to listen to researchers from Poland and abroad, as well as take part in workshops, lectures and science shows.

From 9 to 11 December 2023, we will gather again, this time during the 7th edition of ŚFN KATOWICE, to absorb science again in an attractive and fun way.
