On 16 November 2022 at 4:00 p.m. local time in Great Britain Agata Stronciwilk, PhD from the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Silesia will host a webinar entitled ‘Food, Art and Migration’.
The researcher will talk about the links between food, art and migration. Dishes are often one of the main elements of cultural identity, therefore they are also used politically, e.g. as a way of getting used to the habits of a given social group. Sometimes, however, food can also become the cause of a conflict between the local community and migrants.
Such an important social role of food is the reason why many artists from different cultural backgrounds engage in discussions focusing on food and identity in a globalised world. During the webinar, Agata Stronciwilk, PhD will present various examples of similar projects carried out, among others by Michael Rakowitz, Rirkrit Tiravanij, Dagna Jakubowska and Dorota Podlaska. In all these works, the visibility and recognition of migrant cuisine in public space can be seen as an ethical and political issue.
Agata Stronciwilk, PhD is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Arts Studies of the University of Silesia. In her research, she focuses mainly on the connections between culinary themes and contemporary art, with particular emphasis on topics related to migration, power and gender.
Participation in the event is free of charge. Prior registration via the application form is required.
The organiser of the webinar is the University of Warwick in Great Britain.
